It’s amazing the little tricks you learn that turn out to be so useful. I send a lot of text messages via my Nokia phone and one feature that annoys me is that I have to go into a seperate menu to force a new line.

Thanks to Darla Mack, I’ve stumbled onto an amazing hidden shortcut. If you have a Nokia S60 (i.e. a smartphone) handset then if you enter three zeros then the entry cursor will jump down to the next line. Try it and you’ll see!

I know this may seem like a strange tip, but storing the number for MizPee in our phone may one day turn into a lifesaver. MizPee finds the nearest toilet to your current location. All you have to do is send a text message with your city and state, and MizPee will send back the details of the nearest toilet. Great if you’re in a unfamiliar cit or if you’ve got kids.

It even sends ‘Toilet Paper’ – funny reading material to keep you occupied whilst you’re doing your thing. You can even send in questions for other MizPee readers to ponder while they are spending a penny.

How To Improve The Battery Life Of Your Phone

Although modern phone batteries don’t benefit as much as old batteries from conditioning, there are still a lot of things you can do to make your phone battery last longer:

Always charge new phone batteries for at least 10 hours for the first charge
Don’t use the vibrate function on your phone as it’s a big drain on power
Try to only charge the battery when it is completely empty
Always give the battery a full charge. Avoid partial charges if you can
Don’t use the backlight and keypad tones if you don’t need them
Turn your phone off when you’re not using it e.g. sleeping
Turn off blutooth (and wi-fi) if you have it, when not in use

Also, if you are not charging your phone then please disconnect the charger – think of the environment!

Update 05/10/07:

Li-Ion batteries only last for two or three years, and there’s no way to condition them. Unlike Ni-Cd batteries,
they have no memory, and even prefer to be recharged frequently, rather than fully discharged.

Free 411 Calls With Goog-411

Thanks to Google you can now make free 411 calls using Goog-411. The service can be accessed by dialing 1-800-GOOG-411 from any ordinary phone. The service uses voice recognition; all you have to do is tell it your city and state, then follow the instructions. Results are read back to you or sent via SMS.

I wonder if Google are planning anymore ‘offline’ services?

GrandCentral: One Number For Life

Most people these days have more than one phone number, which rather than making it easier to reach someone can actually make it harder. For instance, which number do you call first – their home,work or mobile? Having more than one number can cause problems for users as well, who have to dial into multiple mailboxes just in case their contacts have dialled a different number.

GrandCentral.com might have the solution for many people. What this new service will do is via a new single number, ring all of your phones at the same time if the new special number is called, and if you don’t pick up all voicemails are left in the same mailbox. This could be handy if you have multiple numbers, or if you are going to change your number because you are changing jobs and don’t want to lose touch with key contacts.
