Readers Tips – How To Hide Your Desktop Quickly

How often have you sat in or given a presentation, and everything is going well until you have to flick to your messy desktop, exposing how unorganised you are or your inappropriate wallpaper featuring some bikini-clad babes?

The solution is simple, and has been right before me for some time, but I wouldn’t have thought of it if Nick hadn’t emailed in this tip:

It can often be embarrassing to show up to give a presentation and have everybody there take a peek at how cluttered your desktop is. To quickly get your desktop looking spic’n'span, just right click on your desktop, follow the “Arrange Icons By” menu and uncheck “Show Desktop Items”. Voila! Your desktop is completely clean and you don’t have to worry about people seeing all of those game shortcuts on your desktop. After the presentation is over, just recheck “Show Desktop Items”. It is as simple as that!

LogonStudio: Customize The Windows Vista Logon Screen

Here’s a very cool app that will allow Windows Vista users a more personal touch to their PCs. LogonStudio from Stardock is a free app that allows you to change the picture for the Windows Vista Logon Screen.

The LogonStudio makes changing the Vista Logon picture a doddle, and changes can be previewed before being applied. It even comes with a visual editor for creating background.

Computer Desktops are funny things. Most people spend a lot of time finding wallpaper that they like to fill the space, but other than that, Desktops don’t really do a lot. But, what if you could make your Desktop work harder?

If you’re a big reader of RSS feeds then one thing that you can do is add your RSS feeds to your desktop, which will be updated live. Instructables have put together a great guide on how to add RSS feeds to your desktop. There are a number of steps that have to be followed, but if you take your time you should get it right first time.

Although some of these aren’t strictly ‘tips’ they do provide interesting information. For instance, I finally discovered why my memory utilization is always high even though I have 4GB of memory.

Free Wallpaper Changer

I’ve been doing a lot of work on my new theme today (what do you think by the way? I think it’s cool!) so I haven’t had a lot of time to find a good tip to write about. Then I looked at my desktop and realised I hadn’t told you about one of my favorite apps which I’ve been using for quite some time.

The Free Wallpaper Changer app is fantastic. Not only does it change your wallpaper automatically at a pre-determined interval which can be anything from 15mins to 24 hours, it also comes totally spyware and advertising free.

It has a simple interface that lets you add your own pictures to an Album, and then you can decide which Album to rotate pictures from. Once it is running it sits nicely in the system tray and if you don’t like the currently displayed wallpaper all you have to do is double-click on the system tray icon to change it.
