Windows XP likes to encourage multi-tasking but if you have a big PC session you can end up with multiple windows open that can make navigating around your desktop very hard.

I used to struggle, until I started some of the cool Freeware programs listed below to keep my desktop nice and tidy and fresh.<span

In fact, I think it does a better job than Flip 3D. This brilliant freeware application adds all of your windows to a drop-down Strip which shows all of your windows as thumbnails. Windows within the stip can be scrolled a-la Vista Flip 3D, and once you find the window you want to use just stop and the window will open.

<a

Even though I have a large monitors I just didn’t seem to have enough desktop space. The problem I had was that I wanted to keep lots of programs running, but having so many programs running meant I had to alt-tab through 15 apps to get to the one I wanted, and scrolling past them made it hard for me to focus.

I decided I needed a tool that would allow me to minimize the windows I didn’t need to see to the system tray, so they could still run, but be out of the way. I wish I’d searched for one while I was at work rather than afterwards, as it only took me 2 minutes to find TrayDevil.

This great little piece of freeware not only allows windows to be minimized to the system tray simply by clicking on a Window at the same time as pressing CTRL, but it also does the following:

Always On Top: Middle(Wheel)-clicking the Titlebar of any Window while pressing the Selected Key will set that Window Always On Top; One Middle(Wheel)-click resets to Not On Top.

Disable Buttons: Disable the minimize, maximize and close buttons in each window titlebar by Key+MiddleClicking the button.

Misc. System Tray: various options including hidingthe System Tray Clock.

Power Functions: Left, Right or Middle(wheel)-Clicking the TrayDevil icon will Restart, Shutdown or Lock the system and much, much more

To try TrayDevil (ignore the awful site, this app rocks!) <a
