Your laptop (or netbook) is not sufficient with the traditional computer security measures alone but requires extra security measures to protect against various security risks such as insecure public wireless network, laptop theft, laptop search, which you don’t worry about with your desktop computer. For example, your privacy is at risk while you’re traveling with your laptop. Various government agencies, including Homeland Security, can search and even seize your laptop to examine all the contents of your laptop, e.g. personal emails, photos, documents and also to look for illegally downloaded or obtained songs, movies and books.
However, good laptop security does not necessarily cost you money. Here are 7 easy-to-use, useful and free software that can help you protect your laptop, your sensitive data and your privacy.
- Encryption. TrueCrypt is a trustworthy encryption program that can protect your data against unauthorized access. www.truecrypt.org

- Backup. If you only need a few files (less than 2GB) I recommend the excellent free Sugarsync. For users with big hard drives an alternative is Mozy, which is an online based backup software. www.mozy.com

- Antivirus. AVG free edition provides protection against viruses, spyware and other malware. free.avg.com/ww-en/download-free. A light weight alternative is Avira free edition.

- Firewall. The built-in Windows firewall, particularly in Windows 7, protects your laptop against hackers while you’re online. (but make sure you use it properly)
- Tracking. Prey is open source laptop tracking software designed to track your laptop if it is stolen. www.preyproject.com
- Alarm. LAlarm helps prevent your laptop from stolen and is like a car alarm for your laptop. Also it can recover and destroy data in case of laptop theft and more. www.lalarm.com
