Buying a new PC can be difficult, because there are so many moving parts in a PC that it’s hard sometimes to tell if one PC is better than another. Many factors can affect the speed of a PC, but the two main ones in my experience are the speed of the CPU and how much RAM is available.
Working out which CPU is difficult because of the number of models available. Although some CPUs are designed for specialist tasks that can make them faster than for those tasks than more expensive CPUs, normally you should just buy the fastest CPU you can reasonably afford.
A quick way to check which CPU is the quickest in a showdown is to use the CPU Benchmark site. They produce very handy charts that shows the relative speeds of CPUs, the higher up the chart your CPU, the faster it is. Charts are available for low end, mid range and high end CPUs. You can even see what CPUs have been the most popular over the last 30 days.
How does your CPU compare? I have a Q6600 which is in the top 1/3 of the high-end CPUsso I’m happy!
