As more and more users are lured by the low prices and expanded capabilities of mobile computers the question of a suitable desk to match this tool is of great importance. I’ve used laptops for nearly a decade and their use compared to that of my desktops is increasing daily. This is simply the result of working on the go and putting all of my documents, email, pictures on the machine I’m on the most. Even when I’m at home I find myself plopping my laptop in front of my monitor to use it instead of the desktop.
Unlike a desktop which has the keyboard nicely tucked away in (keyboard stand?) a laptop is usually set up high on the desk where the keyboard causes a user to raise and outstretch their arms, this results in “…unnecessary fatigue in the shoulders, neck, back, forearms and hands…” according to a Canadian study on laptop use and ergonomics.
My search for the ultimate desk for laptop users was focused on providing an ergonomic and functional experience for users. I looked at a variety of desk offerings and found none that matched the ergonomic requirements of a laptop user. What I found was that the ultimate desktop for laptop users is actually a combination of items that make laptop use functional and ergonomic.
The ultimate desk for laptop users requires the following 4 components;
A Functional and Ergonomic Desk
The desk is probably the most important item on this list. The desk must have the correct height and afford enough space to provide a clutter free environment for the user. The desk must also provide sufficient storage and a separate level for keyboard and mouse so that the user can relax their arms while keeping them close to their body.
The desk I chose for this setup is the multi by Biomorph. This desk meets all functional requirements and ensures correct posture combined with a good chair.
An Ergonomic Chair
The second most important item on this list is the chair. The chair should provide the user with sufficient amount of adjustments to ensure that the user is comfortable and at the same seated correctly.
The chair I chose for this setup is the Mirra chair by Herman Millar. I came across this chair in a recent stay at a Hilton Garden Inn and quickly fell in love with the simplicity and functionality afforded by the chair. The chair provides the user with the ability to adjust chair height, arm angle, arm width, and arm height. The number of adjustments coupled with the comfort and feel of this chair make for a very pleasant experience.
A Laptop Stand
Once you’ve got the basics the next item on your list should be a laptop stand for the desk. The laptop stand serves two functions. The first is provide adequate airflow to keep the laptop cool, the second is to lift the screen to eye level so that the user does not have to strain back and neck muscles when using the laptop for an extended period of time.
The laptop Stand I chose is the Executive Desk Stand from LapWorks. It is functional and provides all of the necessary adjustments. The stand also includes a USB port which can be used for the mouse and keyboard discussed next.
