A colleague of mine asked me today how to add special characters like ticks to her presentation. It made me realise that telling readers about CharMap would make a great tip.
The Character Map, or CharMap, is a often forgotten part of Windows that allows you to add symbols and characters that aren’t on your keyboard to documents. To start CharMap:
- go to Start/Run and type in ‘CharMap’
- Then select the font you want to use (Wingdings is one of my favs) select the character you want to use, and the press ‘Copy’
- Then go to wherever you want to display the special character and paste it in. Remember to get the character to display properly, you have to change the font to match the one you selected in CharMap
