Free Broadband Speed Test

Top Tip: Click here to run a free scan for common PC errors

All broadband ISPs are not the same, and the speed you can receive from each ISP can fluctuate wildly.

If you want to see your ISP is actually giving you the speed that you are paying for, then check out my new Broadband Speed Test below, which in seconds will allow you to see if you are getting the broadband speed you deserve!

Using The Test

Start the test by clicking the big button in the center of the page. The test first starts by downloading a file and measures how long it takes. After the download is finished the speed checker tries to upload a file and measures your upload speed.

If you want to get accurate results then you should not use your internet connection for any other applications once the speed checker is running, and run the test a few times so that an average speed can be calculated.

The broadband speed is measured in Kbps (kilobits per second). Approximately 1000 Kbps is 1Mb/s.

I am happy with my service from sky after they managed to get me a good 4.1MB / 623.  Were AOL I was get 2.8Mb and sometimes was as low as 1.8Mb, I had been with AOL for years and the line was bad since the first day I moved in broadband would drop in and out, after a number of call and a letter of compalint about they service they send a BT Broadband engineer 3 times in four years each time the service would behave for a week or two and would go back to it being unstable. Then I changed to Sky and within less then two months and one visit to the exchange by the BT Engineer the problem was fix and a stable service I get a good 4.1 to my top of 5.2MB sometimes at busy times it drop no lower the 2.8MB.

Not to brag or anything but I think I found a better test…. The above test gives basic speed information but no real info you quality or capability of your connection. My favorite Broadband Speed Test site is http://www.ispgeeks.com.

Click on Broadband Diagnostics then TCP Quality Test or Speed/Cap Test and the rest is simple. They also have a true speed test, voip test and a couple of other things.

You get data back like this (testing my connection)

    Speed test statistics
    ———————
    Download speed: 7437424 bps
    Upload speed: 1646448 bps
Download quality of service: 97 %
Upload quality of service: 95 %
    Download test type: socket
    Upload test type: socket
    Maximum TCP delay: 76 ms
    Average download pause: 3 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 60 ms
Average round trip time to server: 61 ms
    Estimated download bandwidth: 35200000bps
    Route concurrency: 4.7328215
Download TCP forced idle: 77 %
    Maximum route speed: 8738000bps

Plus it even gives you graphical data such as this (based on the test above).
