Thanks for the info :) The article recommends Diskeeper, but I was wondering if there was an opensource or freeware alternative?

    Hey Mosey!

I did a little looking around, and it seems that IOBit Smartdefrag is a recommended title in the Freeware space.

    Hope this helps!

To me its like a silent disease that can slowly destroy the performance of the HDD. I have had enough of the nightmares associated with HDDS including one unpleasant death of a drive ( could not recover my data, one of the reasons being that it was fragmented and full beyond words)
