Guide: Five Ways To Play Your MP3 Collection Remotely
- Orb
- Run Your Own Home Server
Orb is a fantastic service. Once you’ve installed the free Orb server on your PC the world is your oyster. As long as you can connect to the internet via a PC, Pocket PC or cellular you will be able to stream your content, including your mp3s, videos, TV shows (if you’re running Windows XPMedia Center) and photos, to your device. All you have to do is logon and Orb automatically adjusts the quality of the stream and the interface to your device’s connection speed and screen format. If the audio quality was just a bit better then Orb would have scored top marks.
If you’ve added your album art and tagged your mp3 tracks correctly, then even these will appear.

This isn’t for the faint of heart. A web server is software that continuously runs on a computer and allows other computers to download files from it. By setting up a server on your home PC not only would you be able to access your iTunes library as if it were running locally in tandem with this tip.
I’ve been trying to crack this as not only do I want to share my music, but also my videos and DVDs. I’ve had no success yet, but I’m going to try this guide next week after I’ve upgraded my PC to Vista. If I can get this to work then this will be the perfect solution.

Also, try Streampad. Very easy to set up, and it has some cool features like browsing concerts via the Internet Acrhive. Discussed here.
