6. iTunes Dupe Eliminator
If you have a big iTunes library it’s very easy to have duplicate files and dead tracks which are taking up space on your PC. This can also happen when you move files between folders or between PCs as iTunes can get confused. Removing these can be a pain but there is a better way.
Dupe Eliminator from Markelsoft automatically finds and removes dupes from iTunes. It isn’t free, but it does have a 30 day free trial which should be long enough to clean your iTunes library.

7. mp3tag
Mp3tag is the ultimate tagging tool for mp3s. It can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words from tags and filenames, import/export tag information, create playlists, add artwork and much more. The program supports online freedb database lookups for selected files, allowing you to automatically gather proper tag information for select files or CDs.

8. gdTunes
gdTunes is one of my favourite iTunes and Winamp apps. Although iTunes does have a mini window view, it doesn’t display your artwork and it also doesn’t all you to change your ratings. Not only does gdTunes control iTunes and Winamp with the standard controls (next song, play/pause, previous song, and show/hide music player), gdTunes shows the song information (name, artist, and album), album artwork (iTunes only), and the song rating.

9. MusicBridge
If you’re switching to Windows Media Player from iTunes, then this is easy as there’s a great app called MusicBridge. MusicBridge makes it easy to export your iTunes information to WMP. Just install the app and then run through the various ‘Sync From iTunes’ options (Ratings, Covers and Playlists) to add iTunes information to WMP.

10. MCETunes
Windows XP Media Center Edition is great for watching movies and listening to music on your PC. The problem is though, it isn’t compatible with music you have in iTunes, which just happens to be the most popular PC mp3 player. Finally, there is a simple answer. MCETunes allows you to access your itunes music and play it in your living room.
The free version will only play unprotected music that lives in iTunes, which should be good enough for most people.

I hope you found this list useful and that it allows you to get more out of your music collection. If you have a free mp3 app that you think is useful, then please leave a comment and share it with other readers.

Picard is a train wreck… the last time I used it, here’s what you had to do to tag your music:
1. Select files to be tagged
2. Drag them into a sort of queue
3. Select them from the queue
4. look them up on Musicbrainz in your web browser
5. Drag links from the browser back into Picard
After about fifteen minutes of that, I uninstalled it.

True, I sometimes go back and use and use Metabrainz as you can set a threshold level to automatically tag files, and then you can mop up the files with poorer tagging manually afterwards.
